How to Get Rid of Old Urine Stains from a Carpet

By PAT HAMILTON

A carpet’s fibres may become permanently damaged by pet urine stains. The carpet will develop a yellow stain and an unpleasant stench that won’t go away the longer dog urine dwells on it. While it’s ideal to remove the stain right away, there are situations when this isn’t possible. Thankfully, there are a few techniques you may use to get rid of old pet urine stains on carpet.

When the carpet has urination stains

Dog urine have a high acidity level. If a fresh stain is cleaned right away (after an accident), it shouldn’t do any harm. When a stain dries, the acid’s pH level rises, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. The bacteria and organic materials in the urine not only cause the acid to oxidise and discolour the carpet, but they also give off an unpleasant odour. The aroma gets worse and the stain is more challenging to remove the longer it remains.

How to Remove Urine From a Carpet

The carpet can easily be cleaned of recent urine stains but the key is to remove all the moisture from the carpet before wicking takes place and the dog urine sinks to the bottom of the carpet’s fibres.

To fully absorb the urine stain, fold a dry cloth or towel and press it firmly over the spot. Sprinkle baking soda on the stain after extracting as much liquid as you can, and let it sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb any leftover urine and eliminate odours. After that, vacuum the baking soda out of the carpet.

To remove dog poop from carpet, mix one part dishwashing liquid with one part water. Apply the solution to the discoloration using a sponge. Pouring the solution directly on the stain will only result in extra liquid collecting at the carpet’s base and perhaps staining the underlay. Blot the stain repeatedly until it disappears. When there is no longer any urine, blot to “rinse” with a clean, damp towel and then pat dry to remove any remaining moisture.

Use a towel, baking soda, and a solution of one part vinegar to two parts water to blot any remaining moisture from stains that are a day or two old. As vinegars acid can react with the acid in pet pee, avoid putting vinegar on recent pet stains.

Avoid using acidic or highly alkaline cleansers to remove pet urine stains. A pet stain shouldn’t be treated with heat or a steam cleaner because doing so will make it permanent.

Pet enzymes can help if the pet stain is old and has set into the carpet, won’t come out with vinegar or soap, or both. The enzymes eliminate both the stain and the odour by cutting through the germs. Pet enzymes are available from professional carpet cleaners as well as from retailers that stock heavy-duty or pet cleaning supplies.

Spray the enzyme-based cleaning directly on the stain, then wait the recommended amount of time before wiping it away. Make an appointment with a professional carpet cleaner if the stain won’t come out.
