My wood deck is only 3 years old and I can see water is entering into my basement where the deck is nailed to the house. What can I do to stop the problem? When water is entering into the wood frame of a home at a deck connection it usually means that the deck was not flashed or flashed correctly. Flashing is a metal barrier that prevents water infiltration. The deck builder may not have installed the flashing correctly or used incorrect materials. The deck may need to be removed to investigate the flashing. If not corrected significant wood damage may occur. The use of caulking is discouraged as this temporary solution may actually trap water that may otherwise evaporate. |
