I keep getting ice buildup on my roof and water leaks down into my kitchen. My roofer says I need to add ice tape to stop it. Isn`t there some way to prevent the ice in the first place?

Ice is formed on a roof when there is not adequate insulation and ventilation in the attic. You are correct that ice can be prevented and that ice tape is just a method to help melt the ice once it forms. Attics should have 12 inches of insulation above the heated spaces and the attic must be considered a cold space..that is any heat that escapes from the heated space should be vented out of the attic as soon as possible. A correctly installed ridge vent with fully open soffit venting is the best method. Each home is different so review by a contractor who is familiar with modern venting techniques is recommended.
